A photoshoot in Jaipur has sparked controversy after Russian photographer Julia Buruleva faced backlash for painting an elephant bright pink as part of an art project. Many social media users criticised the act, accusing her of promoting animal abuse. Reported by India Today.

Buruleva, who had travelled to Jaipur for an artistic expedition, shared behind-the-scenes details of the shoot on Instagram. She explained that the concept was inspired by the city’s vibrant colours and cultural imagery, which she had been exploring for weeks.

New call-to-action

She said she envisioned “a pink elephant against classic Rajasthani gates,” adding that elephants are a strong symbol of Rajasthan that she “just couldn’t pass by without including.”

According to her, the project involved extensive preparation, including multiple visits to elephant facilities to find collaborators willing to participate. She also highlighted the challenges of securing a location due to heritage restrictions and obtaining the necessary permits.

Finding a model for the shoot was another hurdle, as several people declined to take part because of social and family concerns. Eventually, one individual agreed to be part of the unconventional concept.

New call-to-action

Responding to criticism around animal welfare, Buruleva clarified that precautions were taken during the shoot.

“For anyone worried about the elephant - we used organic, locally-made paint, the same kind locals use for festivals, so it was absolutely safe for the animal.”
