Prateek Yadav, younger son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, dies at 38 in Lucknow
Prateek Yadav, the younger son of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, passed away at the age of 38 in Lucknow on Wednesday. According to NDTV, he was brought dead to the Lucknow Civil Hospital early in the morning.
Prateek Yadav was the husband of Aparna Yadav and the half-brother of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Per police sources cited by NDTV, Prateek was taken to the hospital by family members around 6:15 am, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Aparna Yadav was reportedly not present at the time.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted by a panel of doctors from King George Medical University to determine the exact cause of death. According to NDTV, initial observations reportedly found no visible injury marks on the body.
Prateek Yadav had reportedly been suffering from lung-related health complications for a long time and was undergoing treatment for a blood clot in his lungs. Family members rushed him to the Civil Hospital after his condition deteriorated and he stopped responding.
Prateek was the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav and his second wife, Sadhna Yadav.
Who Was Prateek Yadav?
Holding an MBA degree from Leeds University in the United Kingdom, Prateek Yadav was known as a real estate developer and fitness enthusiast.
According to NDTV, he had gained attention in September 2012 after featuring on an internationally recognised bodybuilding website as “the international transformation of the month”. He had credited the achievement to a motivational conversation with Mulayam Singh Yadav years earlier.
Prateek was also known for his interest in animal welfare and had supported initiatives focused on animal care and protection.
He had once found himself at the centre of controversy in 2017 after purchasing a Lamborghini reportedly worth Rs 5 crore. Critics questioned how a member of a political family associated with socialism could own such an expensive luxury car.
Responding to the criticism, Prateek had said, "I bought the car on loan. I have all the papers, I pay income tax. Why the controversy?" he told ANI.
Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Family Background
Akhilesh Yadav was born to Mulayam Singh Yadav and his first wife Malati Devi. She reportedly suffered severe health complications after childbirth and remained in a vegetative state until her death in 2003.
NDTV reported that Mulayam Singh Yadav married Sadhna Yadav in May 2003, only months after Malati Devi’s death.
Before marrying Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sadhna had been married to Chandra Prakash Gupta in 1987 and gave birth to Prateek Gupta. The couple separated after a year, and their divorce was finalised in 1990.
Marriage With Aparna Yadav
Prateek Yadav and Aparna Yadav got married in 2011 after reportedly being in a relationship for eight years. The two had first met through a mutual friend and initially communicated through emails.
In an earlier interview with a British newspaper, Aparna Yadav had revealed that she had developed feelings for him while studying in Class 10 and remained unaware for years that he was Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son.
Their wedding was attended by several prominent personalities from politics, business, and the entertainment industry. The couple later became parents to two children.
However, NDTV reported that earlier this year, the couple had announced plans to file for divorce, though the decision was reportedly never carried forward officially.
"I am going to divorce this selfish woman as soon as possible. She ruined my family ties. All she wants to become is famous and influential," Prateek Yadav had written in an emotional Instagram post. He had also alleged that she showed little concern regarding his declining mental health.
No Political Career
Unlike several members of the Yadav family, Prateek Yadav largely stayed away from active politics and never contested elections or held any official political position.
According to NDTV, in November 2012, a section of Samajwadi Party workers had demanded that Prateek be fielded from Azamgarh in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. His mother Sadhna Yadav and uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav had also reportedly supported the idea, but it never materialised.
