Greens get their election night started

Green Party co-leaders Chlöe Swarbrick and Marama Davidson are at St Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland as the party's election night event gets started, with a mihi whakatau welcoming attendees.

They have spoken to those gathered, with Marama Davidson beginning in te reo Māori, then outlining in English that "no matter what" they will return to the venue later in the evening.

She then led the congregation in a rendition of Tutira Mai Ngā Iwi.

Comedian Chris Parker is acting as MC. Party campaign director Leroy Beckett - who has worked with Swarbrick since running her initial campaign for Auckland Central in 2020 - and General Manager Miriam Ross have also given speeches thanking volunteers and supporters.

Rumbling thunder and torrential rain have cleared to a striking rainbow over Eden Park, where the Opportunity Party is hosting its main election night event, in leader Qiulae Wong’s Mount Albert electorate.

More than 400 supporters, volunteers and party members are gathering at the venue’s World Cup lounge, which is decked out with teal balloons and banners.

There’s a sense of excited anticipation among the crowd that their party could be on the brink of something special tonight, based on polling.

One long-time supporter said this time round just feels different.

Hamilton West candidate Blair Smith, resplendent in a teal suit he bought just for the occasion, says he’s nervous but excited for what might unfold here.
