Four teens charged after stolen vehicles collide in Auckland
Four teenagers have been charged after two allegedly stolen vehicles they were travelling in crashed early Tuesday morning in Auckland. Reported by 1News.
Police said that just before 3.30am, a member of the public alerted authorities to a group allegedly “interfering” with four vehicles on Stanaway Street in Hillcrest, on Auckland’s North Shore.
Inspector Jason Edwards said five boys, aged between 13 and 16, then fled the area in another vehicle. When officers arrived, they found an ignition barrel lying on the ground.
About 30 minutes later, the Police Eagle helicopter located a group of youths walking onto Zefiro Drive in Massey after abandoning an allegedly stolen car.
“Ground units were directed to their location with all five quickly taken into custody,” Edwards said.
Police later established that the group had been travelling in two stolen vehicles at the same time before the cars collided with each other on the Royal Road offramp.
"We have established this group had just been travelling with two stolen vehicles in tandem, before colliding with each other on the Royal Rd offramp.
"They abandoned one vehicle and had carried on a short distance."
Four of the boys appeared in the Waitākere Youth Court on Tuesday, charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle. Police said the group was also being spoken to in connection with other vehicle-related offences across west Auckland and the North Shore.
Police thanked the member of the public who first raised the alarm and urged others to continue reporting suspicious behaviour.
"Police acknowledge the vigilant member of the public for reporting the suspicious activity in the first instance," Edwards said.
"We know that stolen vehicles are used to commit further offending against the community, so to be able to disrupt this group is a great outcome."
