Driver arrested after 14-year-old hit by car at Tauranga party
A driver has been taken into custody after a 14-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle outside a party in Tauranga late on Saturday night, with police alleging that emergency responders were met with aggression while attempting to treat the critically injured teenager. Reported by 1News.
The incident happened on Kaitemako Rd in Welcome Bay at around 11.30pm. Police confirmed the girl was taken to Starship Hospital in a serious condition.
Senior Sergeant Roger Schreuder said a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle outside a property where a large youth party was taking place.
"Police have arrested the driver, inquiries continue and once concluded, charges are likely," he said in a statement.
"The incident occurred outside of an address where there was a large party involving youths, some became aggressive to police and ambulance staff who were trying to assist the injured teenager. This was extremely disappointing behaviour."
The Serious Crash Unit and the Criminal Investigation Branch attended the scene to begin inquiries.
According to SunLive, a witness described the gathering as “out-of-control”.
Hato Hone St John said it responded with one ambulance, a rapid response unit, and a manager. The injured girl was initially taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland for specialist care.
