NZ-based son allegedly shoots UP man dead over mother’s second marriage
A man who had returned to India from New Zealand days before the incident has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead his stepfather at a car service centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district, according to an India Today report.
India Today reported that Police in India arrested the man and his 23-year-old cousin within 48 hours of the October 10 killing of Navjot, 30. Investigators believe the murder was linked to resentment over Navjot’s marriage to man's mother, police said.
Navjot, a resident of Tah Kalan village, ran Gill Washing Hub in Kumhariya Kalan. He was at the business at around 5pm on October 10 when two men allegedly arrived in a grey Alto car, opened fire on him and fled, according to police.
Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Singh said Navjot "died of gunshot injuries. His father subsequently lodged a complaint at the local police station."
Indian media reports that Police said the man who allegedly shot Navjot had returned from New Zealand around five days before the killing and allegedly conspired with his cousin to murder Navjot.
According to investigators, the man opposed his mother’s marriage to Navjot, reportedly because she was 49 and considerably older than him.The mother had remarried after the death of her first husband, and police said her two sons, who work in New Zealand, were unhappy with the marriage.
Police used CCTV footage and other evidence to identify and arrest the two accused.
"Our surveillance team and the local police worked diligently on the case and successfully arrested both shooters, along with the vehicle and weapons used in the crime. They are being sent to jail," he said.
Police said they recovered the grey Alto car allegedly used in the killing, along with three firearms, six live cartridges and two empty cartridges.
Indian Today reported that the accused were related through the family. "One of them is the stepson of the deceased. The other is the son of the woman's paternal aunt. The accused are cousins," he said.
Describing the suspected motive, India Today report mentioned that "The murder appears to have stemmed from a family feud. The deceased had married a woman considerably older than him. Her sons from her previous marriage were unhappy with her decision to remarry, and preliminary investigations indicate that the killing was carried out because of this resentment. We solved the case within 48 hours, and the team has been rewarded by the SP," Singh told reporters.
Navjot’s father, Nishan Singh, alleged that his daughter-in-law’s sons had opposed the marriage and sought protection for her, expressing concerns for her safety.
Police said further investigation into the case was continuing, India Today reported.
