Person dies following crash in Matamata

One person has died following a two-vehicle crash in Matamata this afternoon. Reported by 1News. 

Police were called to the scene at the intersection of Puketutu Rd and Buckland Rd shortly after midday. A police spokesperson confirmed the fatality, saying, "Sadly, one person has died."

Emergency services responded promptly, with St John deploying one ambulance, a rapid response unit, and a helicopter to assist at the scene.

The road was temporarily closed while the Serious Crash Unit carried out an examination, but it has since reopened to traffic. Police said, "Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

The incident comes amid a series of fatal crashes reported nationwide within a 48-hour period, leading police to issue a strong reminder for motorists to exercise caution.

"Our staff have been busy with several other serious injury crashes that were also attended during this period," said District Road Policing Manager Inspector Sarah Thorn.
