An Indian mother living in New Zealand has shared her appreciation for the country’s healthcare system after receiving a “zero dollars” bill following the birth of her baby.

Kajal said that as an immigrant with Permanent Residency, she was "stunned" with the outcome.

Kajal, who shares glimpses of her family life and experiences as an Indian woman in New Zealand on social media, recently spoke about her experience of giving birth in the country.

“When I went into labour in New Zealand, I was preparing myself for two things,” she shared on Instagram.

“One is the healthy baby and second was the massive bill,” she added.

But the bill she had been expecting never arrived in the way she had imagined.

In a video that has received a positive response online, Kajal revealed that her bill after giving birth was “zero dollars”.

“Then came the moment I was waiting for...the bill,” she shared in the video.

The amount, she said, was zero, not because of a discount or because the cost had only been partly covered.

But for the new mother, the experience went beyond the financial relief.

She also praised the “incredible” care she received from midwives and nurses, saying she was treated with “kindness and respect” throughout the experience.

“Someone was always there to check on us, answering questions and making sure we are okay,” Kajal shared.

She said the support extended beyond answering her questions and addressing her concerns, with the healthcare workers also providing reassurance and emotional support during an important moment for her family.

For Kajal, that sense of care and humanity was as significant as receiving a zero-dollar bill.

She acknowledged that conversations about life in New Zealand often focus on the country’s high cost of living, “but they forget about what it gives you in return,” she said.

“Support, safety, care and whenever you need it the most,” she said.

Beyond the healthcare itself, Kajal said it was the kindness she experienced that stayed with her, adding that “New Zealand gave our family both”.

Her Instagram reel sharing the experience has received a positive response online and crossed 12,000 views.
