A new community garden and sustainability initiative has taken root at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua, thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Rotorua Lakes Council’s Community Matching Fund.

The project was officially launched on 22 January 2025, with High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Neeta Bhushan, and Mayor of Rotorua, Tania Tapsell, present for the opening ceremony.

As part of this initiative, the centre will host hands-on Gardening and Sustainable Harvesting Workshops aimed at reconnecting the community with the land and fostering environmental stewardship, particularly among tamariki (children).

“These workshops are not just about gardening – they’re about growing community,” said Dr. Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand and a retired senior soil and environmental scientist.

New call-to-action

The centrepiece of the initiative includes six wheelchair-accessible raised garden beds, constructed by Duane Changalee. These beds are now producing fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits while promoting environmental awareness and community involvement. The gardens are maintained by volunteers and have quickly become a space for connection, learning, and activity.

Envisioned as both an educational and community hub, the garden encourages people of all ages to engage in sustainable gardening, chemical-free practices, and traditional food-growing methods. It is designed to benefit local families, schools, and neighbours while inspiring future volunteers.

The first workshop will be led by Raewyn, a seasoned gardener and online plant business owner of 20 years. She brings a practical, experience-based approach to home planting.

Workshop highlights include growing climate-suited vegetables and herbs, composting, chemical-free gardening, sustainable harvesting, and exploring the cultural and ecological value of traditional planting.
