Javed Akhtar in trouble over Kangana Ranaut's complaint

Javed Akhtar has been summoned to appear before a Mumbai court on August 5, 2023, in response to a counter-complaint filed against him by Kangana Ranaut. The court stated that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against Javed Akhtar for the offense of criminal intimidation and gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

The dispute between them originated in 2020 when Javed Akhtar filed a complaint against Kangana for dragging his name during an interview while referring to a 'coterie' in Bollywood following the alleged suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

In response, Kangana Ranaut filed a counter-complaint, accusing Javed Akhtar of "extortion and criminal intimidation." She claimed that after her public dispute with her co-star from the movie "Krrish 3," Javed Akhtar called her and her sister Rangoli to his house with malicious intentions and subsequently threatened and intimidated her.

The court clarified that no case of extortion was made out against Javed Akhtar as asking for a written apology does not fall under the definition of "valuable security" under section 30 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Based on the complaint, verification of the complainant, and statements from Kangana's sister Rangoli Chandel, the court found sufficient grounds to proceed with charges against Javed Akhtar for the offenses under IPC sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
