A Manawatū couple marked their $1 million Lotto win in an unconventional way—celebrating with a KFC lunch. The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, discovered that their winning ticket had been sold at their usual Four Square store in Palmerston North, learning of their fortune through the news, The New Zealand

The win arrived on Father’s Day, and the man recalled the moment he realised the numbers matched. He told The New Zealand Herald that he checked his ticket line by line, pausing to double-check the draw date, draw number, and all the winning numbers before calling his wife. She initially thought he was joking.

New call-to-action

After confirming the win with Lotto, he let the store know he would be coming in to claim the prize. He said the experience felt surreal, describing a moment where the staff quietly congratulated him, making him feel like a film star.

The couple is now focused on planning how to make the most of their windfall. Paying off their mortgage is their top priority, and they intend to take their time seeking advice to ensure the money lasts, The New Zealand Herald reports.

They were not the only New Zealanders celebrating over the weekend. Two Strike players also took home $350,000 each, with one ticket sold at Pak’nSave Whakatāne and the other through the MyLotto app to a Christchurch player.
