The Vvaan Box Office collection day 1: Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia’s latest film, The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest, hit theatres on Friday, September 25.
The film has opened with a gross collection of Rs 9.6 crore in India, despite receiving mixed-to-negative reviews and failing to generate strong positive word of mouth so far. The Indian Express reported that the opening gives the film a reasonable start, but its performance over the coming days will determine whether it can maintain momentum.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, The Vvaan earned Rs 8 crore net in India on its opening day. The film was screened across 6,746 shows and recorded an overall occupancy of 26%. As reported by The Indian Express, the opening is higher than the collections of other Hindi releases this month, including Kareena Kapoor’s Daayra and Kunal Khemu’s Vibe, both of which registered collections of around Rs 1 crore.
Directed by Panchayat fame Deepak Kumar Mishra in his feature-film directorial debut, The Vvaan: Force of the Forrestis rooted in Indian folklore. The film combines supernatural fantasy, mythology, action and thriller elements, placing Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia at the centre of the story.
However, sustaining the initial momentum could prove challenging. The Indian Express noted that Sidharth’s previous release, Param Sundari, also opened on a relatively strong note with Rs 8.7 crore gross. Although the film witnessed an improvement in collections over the weekend, it eventually failed to maintain that momentum at the box office.
Vvaan is a major test for Sidharth Malhotra
For Sidharth Malhotra, Vvaan represents an important theatrical test. The actor has been waiting for a successful theatrical release since Kapoor & Sons, which arrived in 2016 and featured Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt alongside him.
As reported by The Indian Express, Kapoor & Sons earned Rs 143.4 crore worldwide against a reported budget of Rs 35 crore. Following that film, Sidharth appeared in 11 films, none of which delivered a theatrical success. His much-praised film Shershaah was released directly on OTT during the pandemic.
With Vvaan receiving unfavourable reviews, its weekend and subsequent weekday collections will be closely watched. The film’s performance will determine whether it can extend its opening-day momentum and give Sidharth a theatrical turnaround.
The film also marks an important release for Tamannaah Bhatia. Vvaan is her first Hindi theatrical film in a lead role in seven years. Her previous Hindi feature in a leading role was Khamoshi, which also starred Prabhu Deva and did not perform well at the box office. Since then, Tamannaah has largely appeared in special song appearances in Hindi films, including Stree and Raid 2, according to The Indian Express.
Avengers: Endgame – Encore adds competition
Although Vvaan received a standalone release in the Hindi market, it was not completely without competition. The major release arriving alongside it was Avengers: Endgame – Encore, the theatrical re-release of Marvel Studios’ 2019 blockbuster.
The Indian Express reported that Avengers: Endgame – Encore collected Rs 8.68 crore gross across all languages, with the English version contributing the largest share at Rs 5.25 crore. It was screened across 3,635 shows.
The re-release includes several additional minutes of footage designed to connect the story more directly to Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to release in December this year.
Vvaan arrives at a time when Indian folklore-inspired films and franchises such as Kantara, Lokah and Stree have found audiences. The latest Hindi film to explore this space, Vvaan is backed by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, who have also produced popular supernatural television franchises such as Naagin, The Indian Express reported.
For now, the Rs 9.6 crore opening provides Vvaan with a starting point, but its longer-term box-office performance will depend on audience response and how well the film holds after its first weekend.
