Veteran actor and comedian Satish Shah, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and versatility, passed away at the age of 74 on Saturday. The news of his death was confirmed by his close friend and filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who shared a heartfelt message and picture on Instagram, Hindustan Times reported.

In his post, Pandit wrote, “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti.” Later, Shah’s manager also confirmed the news to PTI, stating that the actor had been battling kidney-related complications.

A Distinguished Career in Film and Television

Born in 1951 in a Gujarati family in the erstwhile Bombay State, Satish Shah’s acting journey began in the 1970s. He first gained widespread recognition with the classic sitcom “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi” (1984), where his performance, playing 55 different characters, showcased his exceptional range and comic brilliance.

In the 1990s, Shah continued to dominate television with popular shows like Filmi Chakkar and Ghar Jamai. However, it was his portrayal of the witty and endearing Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004–2006) that cemented his place as one of India’s most beloved comic actors.

A Memorable Presence on the Big Screen

Satish Shah made his film debut with a small role in “Bhagwan Parshuram” (1970), later gaining notice for his performances in Umrao Jaan (1981) and Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai (1980). His unforgettable portrayal of a corpse in the cult comedy “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” (1983) remains one of the most iconic moments in Indian cinema.

Over the years, he appeared in several major Bollywood hits, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Hero No. 1 (1997), Main Hoon Na (2004), and Fanaa (2006). His last big-screen appearance was in the 2014 comedy “Humshakals.”
