New Zealand cricket great Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to one of the most successful careers in the country's sporting history.

The former Black Caps captain confirmed his decision in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, saying the time was right to step away from the international game after years of service to his country, as reported by ICC.

New call-to-action

“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time," Williamson said, ICC has quoted.

Reflecting on his journey with the national side, Williamson expressed pride in his commitment to the team throughout his career.

“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand, as quoted by ICC.

“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms," as quoted by ICC.

Williamson leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of New Zealand’s finest batters and most respected captains. During his tenure, he guided the Black Caps to back-to-back ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup finals, including the dramatic 2019 final where he led the side and earned widespread praise for his leadership and sportsmanship.

He also captained New Zealand to its first major ICC title, leading the team to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final in 2021.

Despite ending his international career, Williamson said he remains confident about the future of New Zealand cricket.

“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent, and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team, ICC has quoted.

“It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart,” ICC has quoted.

Williamson's retirement means he will take no further part in New Zealand's ongoing series against England. New Zealand Cricket has yet to announce a replacement in the squad for the World Test Championship series.

Widely regarded as one of the modern era’s most accomplished and respected cricketers, Williamson departs the international stage having played a pivotal role in elevating New Zealand's standing in world cricket and inspiring a generation of players and fans, as reported by ICC.
