A 43-year-old Northland man has been charged with manslaughter, six months after a 62-year-old grandmother was killed in a dog attack at a rural property in Kaihu.
According to a report by Stuff, Police said Mihiata Te Rore suffered unsurvivable injuries during the attack on February 17 at a property off State Highway 12.
Emergency services were called to the address at about 11.25 am, but Te Rore died at the scene.
Her whānau remembered her as an “unwavering strength” and “steady light” in their lives, Stuff has quoted.
“Her love was powerful, protective, and unconditional,” they said.
“Mihiata lived with courage and conviction. She spoke her truth, stood up for those she loved, and faced life’s challenges with determination and grace. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her,” as quoted by Stuff.
Police said the man who owned the dogs was arrested in central Auckland on Wednesday following months of investigation.
“The investigation team has been working tirelessly in the weeks and months since [Te Rore’s death], including seeking a legal review,” Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said. “Ultimately this has resulted in a charge of manslaughter,” Stuff has quoted.
Pilmer said the investigation had been challenging and acknowledged the significance of reaching the point where a charge was laid.
Police said they had remained in contact with Te Rore’s whānau and extended their sympathies to the family, as reported by Stuff.
Pilmer also thanked those who provided information during the investigation, particularly members of the Kaihu community.
The 43-year-old man is due to appear in court.
