India-Canada sign 13 university deals; McGill to launch AI centre in India
India and Canada have taken a significant step toward strengthening their academic partnership, signing 13 new agreements aimed at expanding collaboration in higher education, research and innovation. Among the key developments is McGill University’s plan to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) centre in India. Reported by NDTV.
The agreements are part of broader efforts to deepen academic exchanges, encourage joint research initiatives and create opportunities for students and researchers from both countries.
In a statement, the university said, "This announcement was made as part of an academic mission to India, led by Universities Canada and attended by the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Mark Carney, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Anita Anand,"
McGill University also confirmed that the new AI centre will focus on advanced education and practical training in emerging technologies.
"The Centre is scheduled to launch in May 2027 and will welcome its first cohort in fall 2027, beginning with 50 students and expected to increase to approximately 200 students over time." it added.
The centre will offer a specialised master's programme designed to combine strong academic learning with real-world applications. Students will have the opportunity to work on projects addressing real technological challenges and emerging needs within the artificial intelligence sector.
The initiative is expected to enhance academic cooperation between India and Canada while supporting the growing global demand for AI expertise and innovation.
