Gurjit Singh murder: Gurpreet, wife of convicted killer, admits role in disposing of evidence
A Dunedin woman has admitted in court to disposing of evidence in connection with a murder investigation involving her husband.
Gurpreet Kaur, 29, pleaded guilty in the Dunedin High Court on Tuesday to a charge of disposing of evidence. Her conviction was formally entered before Justice Cameron Mander.
The charge is linked to the killing of Gurjit Singh at Hillary St in Pine Hill Road on 28 January 2024. Singh was fatally assaulted at the property, with the wider case already resulting in a conviction against Kaur’s husband.
Her husband, Rajinder, was found guilty of murdering Singh following a jury trial in December last year.
The court heard that Kaur was spoken to by police at her workplace on 5 February, when officers asked her to provide a statement about her movements around the time of the killing. Before accompanying police, she requested to use a bathroom while still carrying her handbag.
She remained inside a toilet cubicle for several minutes and was heard flushing twice. When she came out, officers observed that she appeared visibly distressed, sweating and unsteady.
Police later searched the cubicle and located a bag in a rubbish bin containing a pair of dark lace-up shoes.
Kaur initially denied any knowledge of the footwear but later told police the shoes belonged to her husband, Rajinder, who had given them to her because he did not like them. She later admitted she disposed of the shoes after becoming frightened when approached by police.
Forensic testing subsequently found glass fragments embedded in the soles of the shoes, consistent with glass from a broken window at the scene of the murder.
Justice Cameron Mander ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared and granted Kaur bail pending sentencing. She is due to be sentenced on 7 July, while Rajinder is scheduled to be sentenced on 1 April.
Police in Dunedin were investigating the death of 27-year-old technician Gurjit Singh, whose bloodied body was found at his Hillary Street home on January 28, 2024. Singh suffered dozens of stab wounds, including one consistent with an attempted decapitation.
Gurjit Singh, who had been married in India just months before his death was last seen alive a day before he was murdered, Narindervir Singh from the Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust said in an earlier comment in 2024.
The post-mortem revealed 46 wounds to Singh, including one suggesting an attempted decapitation.Police investigations included reviewing CCTV footage of Rajinder purchasing gloves, a knife, and a scarf from a hunting store, as well as a mountain bike from a cycling store. Bloodstains matching Singh’s DNA were later found in Rajinder’s vehicle.
