Bengaluru techie killed in targeted Toronto shooting
A 37-year-old Bengaluru-based tech professional was shot dead in a daylight attack in Toronto after his SUV was riddled with bullets in a shopping mall parking lot. Police are treating the case as a targeted killing. Reported by TOI.
Chandan Kumar, originally from Thyamagondlu village near Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, was sitting inside his white SUV when gunfire erupted on Saturday.
According to the Toronto Police Service (TPS), officers responded to reports of a shooting and found Kumar with multiple gunshot wounds.
Images from the scene showed the vehicle covered in bullet holes. Authorities said the suspects fled in another vehicle.
Kumar was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later succumbed to them. The incident marks Toronto’s third homicide of the year.
Chandan Nandakumar, an IT professional from Karnataka, had been residing in Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area. His death has sent shockwaves through both his hometown and the Indian community in Canada.
Family members said he had delayed plans to return to India. His mother claimed he had started a Kannada association in Toronto and suggested it could have been linked to the attack.
His father expressed the family’s grief, saying they had spoken to him just days earlier.
“We spoke to him last Friday. He said he would take leave and come home this summer. We were planning for his marriage. We are completely shattered,” his father told TOI.
The news has left his neighbourhood in mourning.
TPS Inspector Errol Watson acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and its impact on public confidence.
“I can understand how a shooting like this, especially at a mall, can cause concern for the safety of the public,” he said.
Police have launched a homicide investigation. No arrests have been made so far.
