Google rolls out AI-powered Chrome in India with support for Indic languages
Google on Wednesday announced the integration of built-in AI features into its Chrome browser for users in India, aiming to make web browsing more intuitive, secure and helpful. Reported by NDTV.
As part of the rollout, Google said it is introducing support for over 50 languages, including several Indic languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil.
“Google today announced it is bringing many of Chrome's latest AI features, including Gemini in Chrome, to users across India,” the company said in a release.
The new capabilities are powered by the company’s Gemini 3.1 model, designed to help users search for and understand information more efficiently while getting more value from their browser.
Initially, the features will be available on desktop and iOS devices.
Charmaine Dsilva, Director of Product Management for Chrome at Google, said:
"The browser is where we get work done, learn new things and connect with the world.
"With AI built directly into Chrome, we're aiming to make browsing the web even more intuitive, secure and helpful, and for users to have more proactive and intelligent experiences.
We're thrilled for India to be one of the first markets to experience this transformation after the US, underscoring the country's enthusiasm and potential for driving the future of AI and emerging technologies across the globe," Dsilva said.
With the integration of Gemini in Chrome, users will be able to interact with a browsing assistant directly within their current tab without switching between pages.
According to Google, users can simply click the icon in the top-right corner of their tab to start chatting with a personalised browsing assistant, making multitasking easier while browsing.
The company explained that Chrome’s built-in AI can summarise lengthy web pages, generate tasks such as quizzes for studying, and remember previously visited pages, allowing users to close tabs they had saved for later.
Additionally, Chrome will integrate with Gmail, enabling users to compose and send emails without leaving their current webpage. Users can open the side panel, request the assistant to draft an email, review it, make edits if needed, and send it with a single click.
