Apple has introduced the MacBook Neo, its most affordable new laptop to date, priced at $599. The announcement was made during an event in New York on Wednesday, marking a strategic move by the tech giant to attract more budget-conscious consumers. reported by Lisa Eadicicco from CNN.

New call-to-action

The MacBook Neo is notable for being the first Apple laptop powered by a chip typically used in iPhones. The device runs on the A18 Pro processor, similar to the one used in the iPhone 16 Pro, making it the first time Apple has used a mobile chip to power a MacBook.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, described the device during the event as being "totally new" and built "from the ground up".

The new model is part of Apple’s effort to expand its reach beyond its traditional premium market and appeal to users who usually choose Windows laptops or Chromebooks. While Apple’s iPhone remains its biggest source of revenue, Mac computers play an important role in keeping users connected within Apple’s wider ecosystem of products and services.

Compared to other MacBooks, the Neo comes with a smaller display, reduced memory capacity, and brighter colour options, including a new citrus” yellow finish. Its lower price point is expected to attract students and young users looking for an affordable entry into the Apple laptop ecosystem.

Industry experts say Apple’s ability to run macOS on a chip designed for smartphones highlights the company’s advantage of controlling both hardware and software.

“They’re taking a chip that typically serves a lightweight (operating system) and running a more heavy weight (operating system),” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at the International Data Corporation. “And I think that speaks volumes about Apple’s ability to optimize.”

Although Apple is not the largest computer manufacturer globally — Lenovo currently leads the market — analysts believe the MacBook Neo could help Apple gain market share, especially among younger users and in education sectors where Chromebooks dominate.

New call-to-action

The launch also comes at a challenging time for the laptop industry, with ongoing component shortages and rising prices expected to impact PC sales in the coming years.

Apple confirmed that the MacBook Neo will be available starting March 11.
