Bhavreen Kaur's death shocks Waikato school and sporting community

The Waikato sporting community and a Hamilton secondary school are grieving the loss of a talented teenage athlete following her sudden death earlier this week.

Bhavreen Kaur, 15, died on Monday after what sporting officials have described as a medical event. The Hillcrest High School student was widely recognised for her achievements in both squash and hockey and had earned respect from teammates, coaches, teachers and fellow students, The New Zealand Herald has reported.

Tributes have been shared across the region by schools, sports clubs and community organisations, reflecting the impact Kaur had on those around her.

Hillcrest High School principal Christine Williams said the loss had deeply affected the school community.

“The school was reeling from the shock of losing one of our treasured students,” Williams told the Herald.

In an online tribute, the school remembered Kaur as a gifted student and athlete who quickly became a valued member of the school after enrolling in Year 9.

“Bhavreen was multi-talented, exceptional in the classroom and an absolute athlete in her chosen fields of sport. Bhavreen was well-loved by the local squash community and as the captain of the hockey 1st XI her teammates will tell you she was a strong competitor," as quoted by Herald.

A number of sporting organisations, including Squash Waikato, Golden Heritage Empowerment Trust, Te Aroha Squash Club, Hamilton Youth Club and the World Squash Development Organisation, have also paid tribute to Kaur, describing her as one of the region’s leading junior squash players.

“She was determined, hardworking and a pleasure to be around on and off court.

“Your memories will live on in the hearts of your teammates, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing you.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to your parents, family, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,"Herald quoted.

Squash Waikato confirmed that Kaur’s death followed a medical event.

Hamilton’s Lugton Park Rackets Club also acknowledged her passing, posting a message of support for her family.

“Our thoughts are with Bhavreen’s family at this time. A sad loss for the club.”

A private funeral service for Kaur was scheduled to take place in Hamilton on Thursday afternoon.
