13-Year-old injured in Sydney shark attack
A 13-year-old boy injured in a shark attack at a Sydney beach was rescued by a friend who jumped into the water to pull him to safety. Reported by 1News.
The incident occurred yesterday at Shark Beach in Vaucluse, where the teenager had just leapt from a rock ledge into the water when he was bitten almost instantly. Authorities believe the shark involved was a bull shark, based on the nature and location of injuries sustained to both of the boy’s legs.
Speaking on Nine’s Today programme, NSW Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty praised the quick-thinking actions of the victim’s friend, describing them as exceptionally brave.
“As soon as he was in the water, he was bitten,” McNulty said.
“One of his mates jumped in and helped retrieve him from the water, and that's some heroic actions just in itself. It was incredible bravery by that young man.”
McNulty said police officers arrived at the scene by boat and immediately began providing emergency treatment. This included the use of a tourniquet system and CPR to control severe bleeding.
“He applied that [tourniquet] to both limbs and stopped the [bleeding], which potentially saved that young boy's life.”
The injured teenager was brought ashore and rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where he is reported to be in a critical but stable condition. Paramedics involved in the rescue described the life-saving response as “miraculous”.
Following the attack, police closed Shark Beach along with nearby swimming areas as marine specialists investigated to confirm the species responsible.
