Puketāpapa Parks Fetch New Rules In Latest Paw-licy Shake-Up

Aucklanders will soon have updated rules for walking their four-legged companions in Puketāpapa parks and reserves, with changes taking effect later this year.
These updates follow public consultation earlier this year on Auckland Council’s dog policy, bylaw, and regional and local park access rules.
Puketāpapa Local Board Chair Ella Kumar says the changes aim to balance safety and enjoyment for everyone.
“We want our community to feel safe while enjoying our beautiful parks. Shifting some areas from off-leash to on-leash helps ensure shared spaces are more accessible,” she said.
Six parks were included in the consultation: Freeland Reserve, John Moore Reserve, Monte Cecilia Park, Smallfield Reserve, Underwood Park, and Walmsley Park. Based on feedback, five of them will see changes.
Changes from off-leash to on-leash:
-
Monte Cecilia Park: Bowl area
-
Underwood Park
-
Freeland Reserve
-
Walmsley Park: Except for the area between Sandringham Road Extension, Oakley Creek, and the entrance (excluding) to the Sheppard Avenue accessway
Change from on-leash to off-leash:
-
Smallfield Reserve
No Change:
-
John Moore Reserve
Additionally, Monte Cecilia Park will be assessed for a potential fenced dog exercise area.
