A 47-year-old New Zealand woman was found dead in her hotel room in Phuket, Thailand, on October 27, local time.
According to Thai media outlet Phuket News, police from Karon Station were called to the scene around 2:45 p.m. after hotel staff discovered the guest unresponsive in her room near Kata Beach.
Authorities said the woman was found lying on her bed with no visible injuries or signs of struggle. Hotel staff attempted CPR and called emergency medical services, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
The Phuket News reported that several prescription medications, three opened cans of alcohol, and two cocktail glasses were found in the room.
A 49-year-old German man, described as a friend of the deceased, told police that he and the woman had been drinking together at a nearby bar in Kata before returning to the hotel. CCTV footage reportedly corroborated his account.
A preliminary forensic examination suggested that a combination of prescribed drugs and excessive alcohol may have led to respiratory failure. Investigators believe the woman may have been dead for eight to ten hours before her body was found.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) confirmed the death and said that the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok was providing consular assistance to the woman’s family, as reported by Stuff.
“We extend our sympathies to the family at this sad time,” an MFAT spokesperson said, Stuff quoted.
The Karon Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
