Dreaming big and flying free in India

Dreaming big and flying free in India

Hello, little ones! Are you aware of the reason for the yearly celebration of Republic Day on January 26? The reason is not just the holiday or watching parades on TV. Republic Day is indeed an exceptional day because India, in the year 1950, decided to follow its own Constitution on this very day.

New call-to-action

This means that India became a true republic with a system where the people together make the way, and no one is unfairly treated. Have you heard that the Constitution of India is the longest written constitution in the world, with over 400 articles and 12 schedules? That indeed is a great deal of rules to ensure the smooth running of the country!

Take a trip back to the year 1947, which is the year when India gained independence. Life was extremely difficult during that time. The rural population constituted almost 85% of the total population, a majority of whom were living in poverty.

Only about 18% of the Indian population was literate, implying that a large number of children did not enroll in schools. There were very few hospitals, the road network was very limited, and electricity plus clean water were luxuries to most people. The average life span was about 32 years, and families had to toil very hard just not to starve.

However, there was a change in the scenario post-independence. The rulers of India were determined to give everyone equal rights regardless of their religion, caste or sex. Gradually schools, hospitals, roads, and electric power were made available to a wider population.

Currently, India boasts of a literacy rate exceeding 75% while the average life-span has risen to around 70 years. Now millions of children are attending schools and colleges, and India is among the top countries in terms of road network length.

India has been making remarkable advancements in the field of science and technology. The first satellite was launched by India in 1975, the Mars Orbiter Mission was sent to space, and we even have lunar missions like Chandrayaan. The current population of India is over 1.4 billion, making it one of the largest economies in the world.

The advancements are indeed a testimony to the fact that through hard work, unity and adherence to the Constitution, a nation can be transformed. Republic Day is not just about parades and flag hoisting.

It reminds us that freedom comes along with responsibility. We ought to obey rules, assist others, be honest in studying, and care for our environment. Even the tiniest acts, such as planting trees or keeping our schools clean, contribute towards a better India.
