A journey begins: celebrating our new international students

New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) was delighted to welcome international students from India, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, the Philippines and Fiji to our Greenlane, Auckland Campus last Monday to commence their orientation week.
In the week to follow they enjoyed a comprehensive orientation covering transport, safety advice, important contacts and academic information. Orientation culminated last Friday with a guided tour of Auckland’s most famous sights. We will continue to support them as they settle into life and study in New Zealand’s largest city, and value the richness and diversity they will bring to our learning environment.
After our pohiri last Monday afternoon, we caught up with six students - Mohini, Constance, Ke, Raphael, Shizuka and Peng - and asked them about their first impressions and dreams for the year ahead.
NZTC: How did you enjoy today’s pohiri?
Ke: It was really sacred – not religious - but sacred, and at the same time beautiful and lively. Mohini: It was lovely! We all feel so welcome… it’s such a great feeling; I didn’t think it would feel this great!
NZTC: What are your first impressions of NZTC and New Zealand?
Mohini: From the moment I enrolled I had a positive impression of the College. We kept getting emailed updates, letting us know exactly what will be going on when. It was so appreciated. As for New Zealand, I only arrived yesterday. I’m excited and enthusiastic to get started. The fact that it is New Zealand stands out to me…I associate it with a new beginning.
Ke: I’ve been to New Zealand twice before. Regarding NZTC – the staff have been really warm and nice.
NZTC: How have you found your first day of orientation?
Raphael: Really informative!
Peng: I found the student safety information was invaluable. We found out so many things we didn’t know before.
NZTC: What programs are you studying?
Ke: Mohini and I are studying the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education). We’re looking to extend on the education knowledge we already have.
Constance: I’ve completed the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5), and now I’m going to study the Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6). I’m relieving in an early childhood centre currently.
Shizuka: I’m studying the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5) – I’m starting at the beginning!
Peng: Raphael and I are studying the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE).
NZTC: What are your hopes for the first stage of your study?
Constance: It’s going to be a really exciting journey. I want to improve my spoken English.
Ke: I want to really explore career development. I’ve worked in education related jobs for the last six years – now I want to learn about some different areas. In China, we have a saying ‘if you want to know a person’s character, look at their first three years of life.’ Early childhood is such a significant time in life. I’m looking forward to the hands-on experience which will help me with my career and my future family.
Mohini: I’ve had experience teaching 10-15 year olds. Early childhood education is so different, working with infants and small children. I want to improve my level of patience and become a better person.
Peng: I’ve worked as an English teacher before, working with children with special needs like ADHD. I’d like to learn what we can do to intervene at an earlier stage in children’s lives.
Shizuka: For me, it’s the first step towards what I want to do. I think early childhood education is a really interesting area and I believe I can do my best.
Raphael: I grew up with a very different way of parenting – I really appreciate New Zealand’s free-thinking way… how there’s so much room for creativity in a ‘no pressure’ environment. Basically I just want to gain fundamental early childhood knowledge from a New Zealand perspective.
NZTC: What are you looking forward to most about living and studying in New Zealand?
Raphael: Nature, food and coffee!
Shizuka: Making friends and starting on a good career path.
Mohini: Probably the water sports!
Ke: Yes, outdoor sports... maybe even the Sky Jump?!
NZTC: Welcome to NZTC Constance, Ke, Mohini, Peng, Shizuka and Raphael! We are thrilled you have chosen to study with us. We hope you enjoy the rest of your orientation week and look forward to hearing of your progress later in the year.
Mohini: Our thanks to the staff!
