Conception, pregnancy and birth - chiropractic care

Conception, pregnancy and birth - chiropractic care

A question I was asked the other day by one of my patients was “From what age can you begin to receive chiropractic care”? My answer as I reached for a brochure featuring a newborn was, “from the moment that you are born.”

You may be wondering why babies or children would need to see a chiropractor. However, ask anyone who has been in the delivery room and they will tell you that the birthing process can be a traumatic process not just for the mother but also for the baby - even in a natural, drug-free delivery.

The small and delicate body of the baby is put under large amount of stress depending on the position during delivery. Other factors such as the use of epidurals, forceps or other complications and interventions during the delivery further impact the baby, whether externally or internally. Health care professionals have termed this condition "Traumatic Birth Syndrome" (TBS).

Your baby may have wide variety of symptoms ranging from general discomfort to internal, emotional or neurological dysfunction. Studies have indicated possible associations between learning disabilities, lowered immune response, and impaired development as they get older without ever linking it back to the birthing process. However, there doesn’t need to be anything “wrong” with your baby for him or her to benefit from chiropractic care. Chiropractors’ will use absolutely minimal and tender touches to remove the interference from your baby’s nervous system so that it can continue to grow and develop in utmost health.

Chiropractic care doesn’t just benefit after birth though, it can also help with conception and bring ease to the entire term of your pregnancy. There are documented cases of couples who have had problems conceiving and have benefited from chiropractic care. This is because chiropractic care removes interference to your nerves which govern how well your organs are functioning. Chiropractic care can therefore naturally help to regulate menstrual cycles and hormonal levels in both males and females, which are an essential component of conceiving.

We also utilise specialised and modified techniques with particular tables and pillows to allow pregnant females to receive care to support their bodies and counter stress during this special time. Women who have received chiropractic care during their pregnancy often marvel at the reduction in symptoms and the increase in wellbeing they felt from being under care. Again, removing interference to the mother’s nervous system allows the body to better communicate and nurture the developing baby.

Conception, pregnancy and child birth are truly wonderful experiences and I understand that they may also be sensitive topics to discuss. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me on 526 2100. There are many positive articles available on the internet around these topics which I encourage you to research, or contact me at the chiropractic centre and I can forward more reading material to you.

Wishing all expectant mothers and families a healthy and blessed pregnancy.
