Pre-school children in Australia can now learn Hindi

Over 80,000 students from almost 2500 pre-schools in Australia will now be able to choose Hindi as their second language.

A new initiative by the federal government under the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) will now give the opportunity to the young children to learn a second language.

This comes after seven other languages, which were introduced in 2017 namely Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Indonesian, Japanese, Italian and Spanish, SBS Hindi reported.

More than 20,000 children are estimated to join this program this year as Hindi and Modern Greek are being introduced into their curriculum.

Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training, has acknowledged the growing popularity of ELLA’s programme.

“The response we’ve had has been huge,” Minister Birmingham said.

“The enthusiastic feedback we’ve been getting from educators and parents means this year we’ll have record numbers of children learning a second language in our preschools.

“Exposure to another language and culture can have significant benefits on children from a young age – it expands their horizons and opens up exciting opportunities around the world when they reach the workforce.”

ELLA began as a small trial of 41 pre-schools in 2015 and is a digital, play-based programme where pre-school students use a series of interactive applications (apps).

ELLA is designed to be used by educators who do not have formal training and extensive support.

Training and resources are provided to assist educators in the effective delivery of early language learning and cultural awareness.
