Guru Poornima 'memorable'

Shri Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan of New Zealand celebrated Guru Poornima, also known as Vyasa Poornima, on a grand scale at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre on Saturday, July 11.
On this day we honour and respect the galaxy of gurus, who have out of sheer compassion passed on the knowledge of the ultimate truth to the devotees and Indian heritage of learning from the lineage of spiritual education, which passes from the guru to the disciple.
This is the only occasion that Baba wanted his devotees to celebrate. The day commenced with Kakad Aarthi at 6.30am followed by Abhishekam (performed while chanting Vishnu Sahahranamam) and Baba’s Sahasranam.
Pandit. Upendra Bhai Joshi performed Guru puja and Sai Sathyavrat for the devotees and he also explained the meaning and significance of the vrath. 35 families took part in this vrath. This vrath was originally started by Bhimaji Patil of Narayangaon, Poona in 1909, after being cured of tuberculosis by Baba’s grace (ch. 13, Shri Sai Satcharita).
Pujya Ananya Chaitanyaji (Foundation for Self Knowledge) a disciple of Swami Suddhananda and Swami Dayananda Saraswathi spoke on the significance of Guru Poornima which is dedicated to Vyasa Charya and the guru parampara. She said that the full moon day, Poornima, in the month of Ashadh is traditionally celebrated as Guru Poornima or Vyasa Poornima, as in remembrance and veneration to sage Ved Vyas.
She went on to say that Guru Poornima is not just a day but it is a “Chaturmaasa Vratham”.
She further stressed on the importance of Guru and defined Guru as the one who dispels darkness or our ignorance and reveals the truth from Vedas. The pravachan was enlightening and very eloquent as it threw light on why Guru is revered and placed on such a high pedestal.
Pujya Ananya Chaitanyaji released Sai Sumiran its quarterly magazine and handed over the first five copies to devotees present.
A short play was performed a group of Sai Baba devotees which has entertained all the devotees present in the hall. The drama contained some miracles of Sai Baba graced on his devotes as mentioned in Sai Satcharita.
Madhyan Aarthi was held at 12.30pm. Over 400 devotees with love and devotion sang the aarthi. Every devotee had the opportunity to perform aarthi and receive Baba’s blessings. After the aarthi maha prasad was served to all the devotees present.
Pallaki Seva commenced at 5.30pm, where all the devotees present were given the opportunity to carry the Pallaki with Baba’s padukas and His photo in it. The devotees carried the Pallaki while chanting Vishnu Sahasranam to Radha-Krishna mandir, where in the priest conducted puja followed by aarthi.
Dhoop Aarthi commenced at 6.30pm followed by melodious bhajans sung by the devotees. Then the devotees with love, devotion and with awareness chanted Hanuman Chalisa, Sai Ashtakam and Ashtotaram. It was time for Shej Aarthi. After the aarthi all the devotees present were served with maha prasad.
Sansthan is grateful to all the sponsors and the devotees who turned up in large number (over 1000 in total attended on the day for four aarthis) in spite of bad weather and made Guru Poornima a memorable day to remember.
