Youth focus for Islamic centre

June 6 2010
There are some good things happening at the Islamic Centre in Avondale, Auckland.
The centre has initiated an exciting youth project which aims to keep young people off the streets and into making themselves more useful through community activities.
The Avondale Islamic Centre, youth division, gets together every Thursday to pursue activities that steer their youth from wayward behaviour and on to meaningful programmes which will help turn their lives around.
“The Thursday youth programmes have really grown from when we first stated,” centre vice-president Fazeem Hussein said.
“A new member joins in every Thursday through the efforts of the youth themselves,” Mr Hussein told the Indian Weekender.
The sports focus of the Thursday programmes have had a huge impact, said Mr Hussein.
Every Thursday, a group of close to 40 young people gathers at the centre in Avondale and releases their energy on the sports arena.
Here, the centre’s executives have taken a leaf out of the book of the Samoan community where community halls cater for many sports activities.
So far the concept had worked well and he was confident of growth in the future, Mr Hussein said.
“Many young people are determined to be there every Thursday, and that’s a good sign of our youth heading into confident young adults and into focused leaders.”
The membership and participation was open to anybody and evrerybody, Mr Hussein said.
Activities Update
General cleaning of the centre has been maintained by the youth team now for the past two years and they should be complimented for their efforts.
Start of 2010 year has seen a new beginning for the youths, as follows:
* Use of modern technology to deliver lectures (use of DVDs) that is more youth focused.
* Securing a permanent space “Avondale Primary School” for our sporting activities.
* A youth barbecue/swimming day out to mark successful school year (2009) for 99 per cent of the youth passing all their end of year exams (13 Jan 2010).
* A strong feeling of brotherhood has developed with the youths and use of txt and emails to relay youth information is increasing speed.
Winter Camp
Masa-Allahh we had a very successful winter youth camp at Snow Mountain from July 10-12, 2009. Our sincere thanks goes out to all those had contributed to make this event a great success.
Insa-Allah, this will be an annual treat for the youth.
· Distribution of the 2009 / 2010 West Auckland Local Directory
Major fund raising event for the youth has been the distribution of the West Auckland Local directory (2009) and Full set of telephone directory for (2010). Both deliveries happened within the time received high praise from Malcove Distributors for a wonderful work.
Weekly activities
The centre is extensively used to its full capacity with the following activities that bring in crowds of people with a mixture of cultures:
Daily five times salat, Daily Madrasa classes, Tuesday Jamat, Wednesday ladies programme, Thursday Youth programme, Friday ladies programme, Saturday – Urdu Quraan Tafsir programme, Sunday – Dawa Trust Sunday schools, ladies programme, sister Wasima’s children’s programme. As stated above the centre is utilized at its maximum, coordination will be required in future to group programmes together to make room for other activities, (inclusive and exclusive).
Fundraising/special projects
To meet the financial obligations of the centre, the committee (team) really needs to consider options to generate additional income for the centre other than donations and Friday food sales.
Takeaway dinner packs where sold Saturday, May 22. A sincere Thanks to all for the contribution and support.
Proposal – by Fazeem Hussein
I would like to propose for the house to consider and someone to take lead for this project. My proposal is simple:
Set an “informal club” for our elders (males) and provide tea and coffee making facilities. Appoint a programme leader from the committee.
Purpose of this club: “to meet, discuss issues, provide a safe environment, facilitate discussions, time-outs.”
This way, our elders will feel more acceptable to coming to the centre and the centre will become more of a social meeting place and central focus of our lives.
Fazeem can be contacted on 0274-785-874.
