Anger: Control it before it controls you

July 10 2009
What is Anger? Anger is a human emotion. When it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can be the source of numerous difficulties and exposes one to countless problems, such as, problems at work, in relationships and in the overall quality of life. It destroys ones dignity and undermines the principle of humanity that resides within. Anger first enters in a subtle form and gradually becomes all-pervasive.
Cause of Anger: It can be caused by both external and internal events. One could be angry with a specific person or with the specific event, e.g., motorway jam; long queue in the checkout counter or one could be worrying about personal problems. Anger is born of desire. Desire arises from thoughts. Therefore thoughts alone are responsible for both anger and desire. Just as one cannot get cloth without thread and thread without cotton, one cannot get angry without desire and desire without thoughts.
Reaction while Angry: Anger is harmful; it makes one do things blindly. One will have to repent much, for whatever one does in anger. When anger cools down, one sees things clearer and then it is too late to correct what wrong has been done.
Effects of Anger: It is debilitating in its effect. The nerves become weak. Blood is rendered warmer and its composition changes. A simple burst of fury consumes the strength gained from food during three months. It drastically reduces ones stamina. It injects poison into the blood stream and brings about profound transformation those damages it. From anger comes delusion, from delusion, the loss of memory; from loss of memory, the destruction of discrimination; from destruction of discrimination one perishes. Beware, once anger enters the heart, all other wicked qualities will follow. In a nutshell, the fire one kindles for his enemy burns himself.
Symptoms of Getting Angry: The external expression of anger can be found in facial expressions, body language and physiological responses. The taillight of car becomes red as a warning before the car comes to a stop. In the same way, before one explodes into anger, his eyes become red, his lips quiver and the whole body becomes hot.
Control Anger: The moment one becomes aware that anger is rising within him, he must laugh very loudly, or have a cool bath. Or take a glass of cool water and relax in a cool place. If the symptoms are still there, one must immediately leave the place, go to a solitary spot and sit there until peace returns. If with all these measures one still has not been able to control the anger, then one should see his reflection in a mirror and examine the face. After seeing his appearance one will surely feel so much disgust that at once he will be able to control his anger.
Conquer Anger: The goal of conquering anger is to reduce both your emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. You can't get rid of, or avoid, the things or the people that enrage you, nor can you change them, but you can learn to control your reactions. Anger cannot be destroyed by anger and cruelty by cruelty. Anger can be subdued only by forbearance and cruelty can be overcome by nonviolence. It is easy to conquer anger through love, attachment through reasoning, falsehood through truth, bad thoughts through good thoughts and greed through charity.
Points to Ponder: Inquire the cause of anger. Is it justified? Remember that if someone is going to be harmed in the process of your anger, that cannot possibly do good to you. Remember, not to let your tongue into action immediately after you get angry and spill out a torrent of angry words. With enquiry within, you will find that the speed of anger will be reduced.
