Hindi workshop a first

Hindi workshop a first

Suva: A Hindi ‘Possibilities and Challenges’ workshop was held for primary and secondary school teachers at the Labasa College over the weekend.
This was the first time a workshop was held for teachers teaching Hindi.

More than 30 teachers attended the six-hours workshop, which was organised by the Indian Cultural Centre of the High Commission of India in Suva.

Hindi Teachers Association Labasa president, Agya Prasad, said the purpose of the workshop was to promote and encourage Indian teachers to teach the Hindi language, not just confined to the prescribed context.

“Many teachers teach Hindi for the sake of completing the syllabus and are not bothered to create an impact or change, in attitude in the students mind set,” Mrs Prasad said.

She claims that a trend was noticed where students taking up Hindi subjects showed no interest to further their studies.

“We feel that the existence of the Hindi language will fade if the young are not taught the Hindi language at school or at home,” Mrs Prasad said.

“Through this workshop the teachers were encouraged to teach their students to read and write in the Hindi language.”

Indian Cultural Relations director, Dr Kamal Kishor Mishra, was surprised to learn that many Indian students he met do not know how to write and speak the Hindi language fluently.

“I would encourage teachers to upgrade their Hindi knowledge and language by taking up Hindi courses offered at the University of the South Pacific,” Mr Mishra said.
