Wellington Mosque Closed After Online Bomb Threat
The Wellington Islamic Centre (Kilbirnie Masjid) has been temporarily closed after receiving a bomb threat posted on an online platform, prompting an active police investigation.
According to the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), the threat specifically mentioned the mosque’s address in Kilbirnie.
Police confirmed an investigation is under way and said that, at this stage, there is “no immediate known threat” to the public.
FIANZ stated that police have the situation “well in control” and are working to trace the source of the threat. All community activities at the mosque have been suspended as a precaution, while officers carry out reassurance patrols in the area.
Police are maintaining close communication with community representatives and have advised all mosques and Islamic centres across Wellington of the situation.
FIANZ noted that similar threats have occurred in the past and emphasised that police “have always taken them very seriously.”
