A 15-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly stealing an electric trail bike at knifepoint and leading police on a dangerous ride across Auckland’s North Shore before crashing.

New call-to-action

According to a report by 1News, Footage supplied to Seven Sharp showed the teenager speeding along a footpath and onto a residential street before losing control and falling. He was then taken into police custody, while the damaged e-bike was later removed on the back of a truck.

Police said the incident began about 7.40 pm on Tuesday outside a fast-food restaurant on Coliseum Drive in Albany. Inspector Aron McKeown said a teenage boy was approached by another teen, who allegedly threatened him with a knife and took his electric trail bike.

The suspect then rode across the car park towards Westfield Albany and “out of sight,” as reported by 1News.

By chance, the Police Eagle helicopter was already in the area when officers were alerted.

"Eagle responded and located the bike being driven at excessive speed on the Northern Busway," McKeown said, 1News has quoted.

"The bike has continued to be tracked by Eagle, as it exited at Constellation Station, making its way onto the Northern Motorway," 1News has quoted.

Police did not initiate a pursuit but monitored the rider from the air. The teen was later seen travelling along Tristram Ave, cutting through a football game at Becroft Park, and heading towards Milford.

"This reckless run came to an end after he fell off the bike on Bevyn St," McKeown said.

"The 15-year-old didn’t suffer any injuries, but he did find himself in handcuffs and under arrest," as quoted by 1News.

New call-to-action

The teenager was scheduled to appear in the North Shore Youth Court, charged with aggravated robbery, reckless driving, and possession for supply of cannabis.

"We are ensuring the young victim is being provided by support after this unsettling event," McKeown said, 1News has quoted.
