PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister, Completes 4,399 Days in Office

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, completing an uninterrupted tenure of 4,399 days in office. According to NDTV, BJP leaders across the country congratulated the Prime Minister on achieving the historic milestone and praised his leadership over the past 12 years.

As reported by NDTV, PM Modi, who first assumed office in 2014, surpassed the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Nehru, elected in 1952, took oath on May 13 and remained in office until May 27, 1964, serving a tenure of 4,398 days. His earlier period from 1947 to 1952 was as head of the interim government before general elections were institutionalised.

New call-to-action

According to NDTV, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for a total of 14 years between 1966 and 1984, but her tenure was not continuous as she was voted out of office following the 1977 general elections held after the Emergency.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated PM Modi on the achievement and described it as a reflection of the immense trust that the people of India continue to place in his leadership.

"Congratulations to Shri Narendra Modi Ji on becoming the longest serving elected Prime Minister in India's history, completing 4,399 days in office.

A tireless Karmayogi guided by the principle of Nation First, his tenure reflects unwavering dedication to India, steadfast commitment to the welfare of its people, and transformative leadership in service of the nation," Singh posted on X.

"This achievement is a testament to the enduring trust reposed in his leadership by the people of India and his relentless pursuit of inclusive development and good governance.

Over the past twelve years, India has made remarkable progress in development and global leadership, while also experiencing a civilisational reawakening that has made the nation more confident, self-assured, and rooted in its heritage," he added.

"As India advances towards the goal of Viksit Bharat, PM Shri Modi continues to lead the nation towards greater prosperity, progress, and global prominence," he said.

NDTV reported that several Union Ministers also highlighted the Prime Minister’s contribution to governance reforms, economic resilience, social transformation, and the expansion of welfare initiatives aimed at ensuring development reaches the last mile in line with the principles of Antyodaya.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the occasion as a historic moment in India’s democratic journey.

New call-to-action

"4,399 days and counting...A historic day as PM Narendra Modi ji becomes the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of India today," Goyal wrote on X.

He said that under PM Modi's leadership, India had witnessed major reforms that benefitted farmers, entrepreneurs, women, MSMEs, youth and the middle class.

"Over the last 12 years, his leadership has ushered in transformative reforms that have reshaped India's growth journey. From farmers to entrepreneurs, women to MSMEs, and youth to the middle-class, the benefits of every major initiative introduced under the Modi Government have reached the grassroots level, empowering crores across the country," he said.

According to NDTV, Goyal further noted that India’s global standing has significantly improved during PM Modi’s tenure and that his leadership remains central to the nation’s vision of becoming a developed country by 2047.

"This is truly a day to honour his dynamic leadership, which has elevated India's stature on the global stage and earned PM Modi ji several prestigious global accolades.

As India continues to achieve many more milestones across diverse sectors, his vision, foresight & stewardship remain central to the nation's journey towards a Viksit Bharat by 2047," he added.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal described the milestone as a landmark chapter in India’s political and developmental history.

"Today is a very special day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 12 years as Prime Minister. In these 12 years, the country has progressed in every field. The scale of schemes has expanded, and the nation's prestige and honour have risen," he said.

"A Prime Minister who kept the economic pillars sound, increased the size of the economy, and is leading the country toward a 5 trillion-dollar economy. He also kept inflation under control and increased employment opportunities. By conducting operations like surgical strikes, air strikes, and Operation Sindoor, he increased the honour and respect of India in the country and the world," Meghwal added.

As highlighted by NDTV, supporters of the Prime Minister have also pointed to the expansion of welfare programmes, rural development initiatives, and tribal welfare schemes that have sought to ensure more inclusive and equitable access to the benefits of development. Initiatives such as PM-JANMAN and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan have been cited among programmes aimed at improving the lives of underserved communities and strengthening the vision of Antyodaya.

According to NDTV, PM Modi’s journey from 2014 to becoming the country’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister is being viewed by party leaders as a reflection of the confidence reposed in his leadership by the people of India. They maintain that his tenure has been marked by governance reforms, economic growth, infrastructure development, social welfare expansion, and efforts to position India as a stronger voice on the global stage.

With 4,399 days in office and counting, NDTV reported that PM Modi’s leadership continues to shape India’s path towards the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat, while supporters see the milestone as a significant moment in the nation’s democratic history.

Upcoming New Zealand Visit

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks this historic milestone, attention is also turning to his upcoming visit to New Zealand, which is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

The visit is likely to focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, education, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. Analysts believe the engagement could open new avenues for collaboration while reinforcing India's growing partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

The visit is also expected to underscore India's commitment to deepening strategic and economic relations with key international partners as it advances towards the vision of Viksit Bharat.
