Job Cuts Hit Nelson Seafood Sector
Sealord Cuts 48 Jobs as Nelson Operations Shift to Seasonal Model
Seafood giant Sealord has confirmed 48 job losses at its Nelson site as part of a move to seasonal operations.
The change means the company’s wetfish factory will close in December and reopen in May, aligning with the hoki fishing season. Reported by RNZ.
Earlier, Sealord had already announced the closure of its coated fish factory, cutting 79 jobs.
Chief executive Doug Paulin said the seasonal shift would allow the company to keep 81 permanent and 400 seasonal roles, preserving most of its regional impact.
Paulin noted that products from the Nelson wetfish factory were loss-making outside the hoki season due to rising costs, lower fish volumes, and falling export prices.
The Nelson region has faced a wave of redundancies recently, with major employers like Carter Holt Harvey, Griffin’s Snacks, and Kono also announcing job cuts.
