India tightens registration rules for foreigners staying beyond 180 days

The changes are aimed at streamlining immigration procedures and ensuring better compliance with registration norms.

India has revised its immigration regulations, requiring foreign nationals who intend to remain in the country beyond 180 days to complete their registration process before the expiry of that period, according to a report by WION.

The updated provisions were introduced through amendments to the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, notified by the Union Home Ministry and published in the official gazette on Monday, WION reported.

Under the revised rules, foreigners entering India on visas valid for 180 days or less must register before the completion of the 180-day period if they plan to extend their stay beyond the authorised duration.

New call-to-action

According to WION, the amendment alters an earlier provision that allowed foreign nationals to register within 14 days after crossing the 180-day threshold from their arrival date in India.

The Home Ministry has also introduced certain relaxations concerning children born in India to foreign parents and has updated reporting requirements for hospitals, as reported by WION.

The notification stated, “The Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025 (hereinafter referred to as the said rules), in rule 12, ‘(a) in sub-rule (1), ‘(i) in the third proviso, for the words ‘within fourteen days after the expiry of one hundred and eighty days of his arrival in India’, the words ‘any time before the expiry of the said period of one hundred and eighty days’ shall be substituted."

According to WION, the amendment effectively advances the registration deadline, ensuring that foreign nationals complete the process before the initial 180-day period expires rather than after it.

The revised framework is part of the government's ongoing efforts to streamline immigration procedures and strengthen compliance requirements for foreign visitors staying in India, WION reported.
