Muditha Kannangara, a resident of Auckland, went to bed last Friday eagerly anticipating a well-deserved holiday with his wife and two daughters. However, within a few hours, his plans took a tragic turn when he was struck by his own vehicle while trying to thwart a thief attempting to steal it.

Krishan Gallage, the founder of Sri Lankan New Zealand Helpline (SLNZ), revealed that the family, who had recently moved into a new house in Howick and planned a trip to Rotorua the next day, now finds themselves in distress. Kannangara, badly injured and regretful of his spontaneous decision to protect his vehicle, is currently recovering at Middlemore Hospital after undergoing surgery for his injuries.

Gallage shared that Kannangara, awakened by a disturbance in his driveway around 6:30 am on Saturday, rushed downstairs in a moment of confusion, driven by the anticipation of the promised family trip. To his dismay, he discovered an intruder attempting to steal his car and attempted to intervene, resulting in being run over by the thief.

Kannangara's family, especially his wife, now lives in fear of further incidents, feeling insecure at home with their young children. Reflecting on the ordeal, Gallage emphasized that Kannangara acknowledges the hindsight realization that he should have allowed the police to handle the situation.

Gallage issued a plea for people not to confront thieves, emphasizing the value of life over material possessions. He highlighted the frustration of feeling helpless in such situations but pointed out that Muditha's experience serves as a lesson on the risks and the broader impact on families and communities.

Expressing gratitude, Gallage and the family thanked the police for their prompt response, as well as St John's Ambulance and hospital staff for their ongoing support. In response to the incident, the community has united to create a fundraising page, the Mudi Recovery Fund, to assist Kannangara's family. Donations can be made to the account number 02-0506-0250437-009.

As of now, the police report no updates in the ongoing investigation into the incident. SLNZ, a free helpline offering assistance to Sri Lankans in New Zealand, continues to provide support under Gallage's voluntary leadership.
