Indian kite festival returns to Auckland – full details inside
Auckland, NZ – The skies over Avondale are ready to come alive with a kaleidoscope of colour as the Indian Kite Festival returns on Saturday, 17 January 2026, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, 18 January. Taking place at Eastdale Reserve from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM, the festival promises a full day of vibrant culture, family-friendly entertainment, and spectacular kite flying.
Now celebrating its 19th year, the Indian Kite Festival has firmly established itself as one of Auckland’s most cherished multicultural events. Organised by Vaishnav Parivar NZ (VPNZ), the festival has grown steadily in popularity over the years, attracting an estimated 8,500 visitors at last year’s edition from across the city.
A Sky Full of Colour
Central to the festival is a dedicated 2,000-square-metre kite flying zone, offering enthusiasts plenty of space to showcase their skills. Festival-goers can also purchase from an impressive collection of 6,000 imported kites and 700 reels of thread brought directly from India. To ensure comfort for all attendees, a further 225-square-metre covered seating area has been designated for senior citizens and children.
Entertainment and Activities for All Ages
While kite flying remains the festival’s highlight, organisers have crafted a rich programme of entertainment and activities designed to engage visitors of all ages. Stage performances will feature music and dance, while children can enjoy competitions including face painting and drawing. Families can also make the most of fun rides and amusement activities, alongside food stalls offering a wide variety of cuisines to suit every palate.
Adding an extra layer of excitement, raffle tickets priced at $5 each will be available, offering attendees the chance to win more than 10 attractive prizes. Among the top prizes are return flights for two to Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, generously provided by Travel Corner.
A Celebration of Multiculturalism
Over the years, the Indian Kite Festival has grown into a symbol of Auckland’s diversity, inviting people from all communities to come together and share in the simple joy of kite flying. Each edition introduces new elements to keep the experience fresh and engaging, and the 2026 festival promises surprises to delight both first-time visitors and long-time supporters alike.
