The Waiapu Precinct in Onehunga is poised for a transformation with plans moving into the detailed design phase, paving the way for construction work to commence by the year's end, according to Auckland Council website. Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has given the green light to a concept design following a successful public consultation in March, where hundreds of residents expressed support for the proposed developments.

Debbie Burrows, the deputy chair of the board, expressed satisfaction with the community's overwhelming backing of the project, stating, "A lot of the feedback around the design was well-considered, and the local board is happy to approve the finalised plan that will revitalise Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane." She added, "Like you, we are very much looking forward to seeing the upgrades take shape."

With approval granted, Eke Panuku will now advance the project to the next stages of design, with initial earthworks slated to begin in May 2024, followed by underground services and drainage work commencing later in the year. Streetscape improvements are scheduled for 2025, along with the construction of a new play space.

The approved concept design includes the creation of a new public plaza, green spaces, a family play area, and safer walking connections between Waiapu Precinct, Onehunga Mall, and the planned expansion of the Dress Smart retail precinct. The design will also incorporate elements reflecting cultural identity, in collaboration with artist Graham Tipene, appointed by mana whenua.

Public feedback highlighted a desire for an upgraded playground catering to various age groups and more greenery to enhance public spaces. Community priorities such as improved walking and cycling infrastructure, safety and lighting, and parking provisions were also identified.

Kate Cumberpatch, Eke Panuku Onehunga Priority Location Director, expressed excitement about the project, stating, "This project marks the beginning of a series of initiatives aimed at revitalising Onehunga’s central precinct." She added, "Improving safer walking connections, creating new public spaces, and providing more greenery will add to the future expansion of the Dress Smart retail precinct with an incoming supermarket, and reinvigorate the town centre."

Sustainable urban development is seen as key to ensuring a thriving and resilient town centre for Onehunga, both now and in the future.
