An Auckland man has been sentenced to prison after authorities uncovered tens of thousands of files depicting the sexual abuse of children and infants on his electronic devices, The New Zealand Herald has reported.

Reopoamo Darklie Tufunga, 27, was sentenced in the Auckland District Court to 35 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to two charges of distribution and possession of objectionable material involving the sexual exploitation of children. He had initially denied the charges but later changed his plea after what investigators described as “overwhelming” evidence, according to the Herald reported.

The case stemmed from an investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs’ digital child exploitation team, which executed a search warrant at Tufunga’s home in May 2023. Several electronic devices were seized during the operation.

A forensic examination revealed 64,157 images and videos, including material depicting the rape and torture of babies and young children, along with other extreme content. Investigators also found that Tufunga had distributed nearly 18,000 files of child exploitation material to three other individuals, Herald reported.

Manager of the digital child exploitation team Tim Houston said he hoped the outcome would bring a measure of justice.

“The vast number of objectionable files in the offender’s possession is deeply disturbing. It is crucial that he has been brought to justice and prevented from causing any further harm.

“Distributing child sexual abuse material and interacting with other offenders cultivates dangerous behaviours and increases the risk of physical harm to children," The New Zealand Herald quoted Houston as saying.

As part of the sentence, Judge Belinda Sellars, KC, ordered that Tufunga be placed on the child sex offender register and that all electronic devices used in the offending be destroyed, Herald reported.
