A 24-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Manukau District Court today after an alleged stabbing during an attempted robbery at a South Auckland train station early this morning.

Police were called to Manurewa Railway Station at about 1.20am following reports that a person had been stabbed while waiting for a bus.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michele Gillespie said the victim was approached by someone they did not know before the attack unfolded.

"The offender has then allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times, before unsuccessfully attempting to steal their backpack," she said.

A member of the public intervened during the incident, prompting the alleged offender to flee.

"A member of the public has seen the assault occurring, and has driven towards the scene, causing the offender to flee."

Emergency services responded to the scene, with Hato Hone St John confirming it dispatched an ambulance, an operations manager and a rapid response vehicle.

"One patient was assessed by the crew at the scene and transported to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition."

Police later located the alleged offender nearby with the help of a police dog and took him into custody.

Gillespie thanked members of the public who assisted the victim before emergency services arrived.

The man faces a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
