Auckland man charged after alleged $9000 chocolate theft spree
An Auckland man has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing more than $9000 worth of chocolate from supermarkets across the city.
Police said the 35-year-old man is facing 21 shoplifting charges and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance in August.
"The recidivist shoplifter, allegedly responsible for more than $9000 worth of stolen goods in one area of Auckland alone, was arrested on the weekend," Police said in a statement online.
According to Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager Inspector Wayne Kitcher, the alleged offending involved the theft of “hundreds” of chocolate blocks from multiple supermarkets.
“It appears this person has allegedly targeted chocolate from various supermarkets across the city,” Kitcher said.
Police allege that on one occasion, the man stole approximately $3000 worth of chocolate blocks from a supermarket in Te Atatū.
Kitcher praised the work of officers involved in the investigation, describing the arrest as the result of “exceptional police work”.
“[The arrest] is an example of some exceptional police work, particularly by one of our intelligence officers, which led to this arrest.
“Police is continuing to target prolific offending against retail businesses in our communities.”
Police are reminding members of the public to report thefts as they occur by calling 111, or to contact 105 after the incident has taken place.
