Small business owners, including the many in our Indian communities, work tirelessly, and Labour wants to back them with our small business action plan.
Under a Labour Government, small business owners will get paid sooner, get more support to invest in the equipment they need, and keep more of what they earn.
Recently, a new report commissioned by the Waitakere Indian Association found that Kiwi Indians contributed more than $37 billion to New Zealand’s economy in the year to March 2025.
It also found that Kiwi Indians supported more than 220,000 full-time jobs and operated 34,000 businesses.
These are huge contributions and reflect just one aspect of how hardworking our Indian communities are.
When we look at small business owners in particular - they take the risks, put in the hours, employ locally and keep our communities running.
But under National, they’re being squeezed by rising costs and falling demand.
Business liquidations are at a 15-year high, business confidence is falling and Christopher Luxon is telling hardworking business owners they’re too soft and to grow up.
Labour understands that small businesses are the backbone of our economy. We will back them, help them grow, and build the economy from the ground up.
Labour's Small Business Action Plan – A Fair Go will:
• Require big businesses to pay small suppliers within 15 days on invoices of $25,000 or less and to publish how quickly they pay their suppliers.
• Lift the asset write-off from $1,000 to $10,000 for businesses with annual turnover below $10 million, so small businesses can immediately deduct the cost of new equipment from their tax bill.
• Raise the GST registration threshold from $60,000 to $80,000 meaning around 35,000 of the smallest operators will no longer have to register for GST.
With about three months to go, I’m heartened by the incredible support Labour has received from our Indian communities, but we are not taking any of it for granted.
We will be campaigning hard to earn every single bit of your support this coming election.
I’ve heard overwhelmingly that Kiwis want change, and the best way to make that happen is to ensure you’re enrolled to vote.
New Zealanders deserve a government that backs them. One that promotes unity over division.
One that is focused on building a more affordable New Zealand.
Come November, Kiwis will get that choice.
