A low-fat strawberry yoghurt ice cream sold in supermarkets for less than $5 has been crowned New Zealand’s best ice cream, reported RNZ.
According to a report by RNZ, Much Moore’s Strawberry Low-Fat Yoghurt Ice Cream beat more than 260 entries to take out the Supreme Champion title at this year’s NZ Ice Cream and Gelato Awards, held in Auckland on Thursday night. Judges praised its “great freshness” and “creamy mouthfeel,” awarding the family-owned Auckland business the top honour for a second year running.
The company, which also won the Low-Fat Ice Cream/Frozen Yoghurt Champion category, has become a dominant force at the awards, securing 30 medals last year alone, RNZ reported.
Sharing the spotlight was Takapuna Beach Café on Auckland’s North Shore, whose Licorice Gelato claimed the Supreme Boutique Champion title. Judges hailed its “unfaultable texture” and distinctive flavour, wrote RNZ.
Other standout winners included last year’s boutique champion, Little ’Lato, which again impressed with its vegan creations. Its Mango Lassi Vegan Gelato was named Dairy-Free Champion, while its Chocolate Orange Sorbet and Pink Wafer Gelato also took home trophies, RNZ reported.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Natural, the 2024 Supreme Champion, continued its strong run with two trophies for Chateau Peach and Raspberry and Killinchy Gold Pure Vanilla Bean.
Among the 18 champions announced were several inventive flavours, including Island Gelato’s cucumber and yuzu, spiced Biscoff, and green tea, RNZ reported.
The awards, which celebrate the best in New Zealand’s ice cream and gelato industry, highlighted both the creativity of boutique makers and the accessibility of supermarket favourites.
