The Hindu Heritage Centre, in collaboration with Hindu Youth New Zealand, will host Rotorua’s first-ever community Ganesh Visarjan on Sunday, 31 August 2025, marking a milestone in the city’s cultural calendar.

The programme, running from 2.45 pm to 5.00 pm, will bring families and community members together for prayers, bhajans, and cultural performances, creating what organisers describe as a vibrant atmosphere of “faith, unity, and joy.”

New call-to-action

Traditionally, Ganesh Chaturthi in Rotorua has been celebrated within individual households. With the local Hindu community steadily growing, the collective celebration reflects both cultural pride and environmental consciousness. Only eco-friendly clay idols of Lord Ganesha will be used for the immersion ceremony.

“This celebration is very special for us as youth. It gives us an opportunity not only to express our devotion but also to connect with our heritage and share it with the wider Rotorua community,” said Komal Sahani, programme coordinator.

The immersion of the clay idol in water, organisers said, symbolises the cycle of creation and dissolution, while reinforcing a commitment to sustainability.

Scripture Classes Anniversary

Earlier in the day, from 1.00 pm to 1.20 pm, the Hindu Council of New Zealand will celebrate one year of weekly Hindu Scripture Classes. Led by volunteer teacher Ishwari Vaidya, the classes have introduced children to Vedic shlokas, mantras, and their meanings, with a focus on applying spiritual teachings in everyday life.

“The scripture classes are not only about memorising verses. They help our children understand universal values and strengthen their cultural identity,” Vaidya said.

Plans are underway to expand the initiative through more interactive workshops and collaborations with experts in Australia.

Children’s Ganesh Idol-Making Workshop

From 1.20 pm to 2.45 pm, children will participate in an eco-friendly Ganesh idol-making workshop. Using natural clay, participants aged 3 to 18 will craft their own idols under the guidance of Vaidya and volunteer parents.

“This hands-on activity not only connects children with their heritage but also instils values of sustainability and environmental care,” said Dr. Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, thanking the Rotorua Civic Arts Trust for its support.

Celebrating Culture and Community

Organisers say the series of events, the idol-making workshop, scripture class anniversary, and Ganesh Visarjan, reflects a broader effort to strengthen community bonds and celebrate Rotorua’s diversity. The day will conclude with offerings, collective prayers for peace and prosperity, and the sharing of prasad (blessed food).

The Hindu Youth of New Zealand have extended an open invitation to people of all ages and backgrounds to join the celebrations and experience the traditions of Ganesh Chaturthi.
