Statistics NZ said the estimated resident population was provisionally 5,324,700 in August 2025, down from 5,330,600 in March.
As reported by Stuff, between June 2024 and June 2025, 58,365 live births were registered, an increase from 57,006 the previous year. Deaths fell to 37,323, compared with 37,500 a year earlier.
The total fertility rate edged up to 1.57 births per woman, while the infant mortality rate also rose to 5.14 deaths per 1000 live births, from 4.95.
As of June, females made up about 2,678,500 of the population and males 2,646,200, with median ages of 39.0 and 37.4 years, respectively.
