Monalisa Bhosle, the teenager who became an overnight social media sensation during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year, is set to make her debut in Malayalam cinema, The Indian Express reported.
The Indore native, fondly nicknamed “Monalisa” by fans, first drew nationwide attention when videos and pictures of her selling garlands at the Mela went viral.
Her sudden popularity not only brought massive footfall from curious visitors but also triggered debates on the objectification of women in public spaces.
The Indian Express wrote, On Tuesday, Monalisa confirmed her entry into films by sharing glimpses from the pooja ceremony of her debut project, Nagamma. The film pairs her opposite Neelathamara (2009) star Kailash and is directed by P. Binu Varghese, with Jeeli George as producer. Filming is expected to commence by the end of September, according to OnManorama.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the pooja in Kochi was attended by celebrated filmmaker Sibi Malayil, known for classics such as Kireedam (1989), Bharatham (1991), and Kamaladalam (1992). For director Binu, Nagamma follows his recent project Himuchri, which starred veteran actor Shankar.
This isn’t Monalisa’s first encounter with Kerala. In February, she had inaugurated a Chemmanur Jewellers showroom in Kozhikode, arriving in a car owned by the group’s chairman Boby Chemmanur. The event drew huge crowds, where she even performed alongside Chemmanur, adding to her public charm, reported The Indian Express.
From selling garlands at the Mahakumbh to stepping into the world of cinema, Monalisa’s journey underlines the growing power of social media in catapulting ordinary lives into stardom.
