Samsung Introduces Galaxy Note7

Last week, Samsung dropped its flagship phablet Galaxy Note 7 on the world.

The phone had its global launch on August 2 at Samsung Unpacked event in New York. After a runaway success of Galaxy 7 and Galaxy 7 Edge, Samsung seems to be on a winning streak here as the industry lauds what the all-new Note 7 brings to the table. Just in case you are wondering where Note 6 went, Samsung did away with that generation to bring the new Note at par with Galaxy 7.

With the Note 7, Samsung has stuck to the design language introduced and honed in for the last couple of iterations of the Galaxy series. As a result, it does look a lot like Galaxy 7 when you first set your eyes on it. It does have a huge 5.7-inch screen but the phone retains the slickness and smooth curves. The display is cutting edge or dual-EDGE to be more specific. It is a QHD AMOLED panel with stunning 518ppi. Needless to say, media consumption would be a treat on this screen.

Performance wise, it packs Exynos 2.3 GHz Octa-core processor coupled with 4 GB of LPDDR 4 RAM. It also packs a 3,500 mAh battery and comes with Android Marshmallow based skin. The phone does feature fast charging and in a first, it also has a USB Type-C port.

Like its predecessors, Note comes bundled with S Pen too. This time the stylus is much more accurate due to a smaller 0.7mm tip. After various complaints with the Pen in Note 5, Samsung has made it idiot-proof this time, which means users would not damage the device if they insert the stylus incorrectly. The pen is also water-resistant just like the phone itself and it recognises 4,096 different pressure levels to bring that 'ink on paper' feel. Among the new features, it lets you take a quick memo without unlocking the phone and 'pin' the memo on the screen. It also lets you easily create and share GIF animation files. The Pen also enables the user to easily 'Magnify' and 'Translate' by just hovering the stylus on the phone.

Another highlight of the phone that was long rumoured and turned out to be true was the inclusion of an iris scanner to enable additional security. The phone still has a fingerprint scanner but just adds a layer of security. Of course, you need to set it up when you use the device for the first time. Once it is set up, all you need to do is look at the device to unlock it. Although it is the first iteration of this feature on a Samsung device, the company seems to have spent a lot of time perfecting this feature and it is evident in the smooth and swift unlocking. Now, if the users are happy in the real world with this feature, it might soon become a norm on all the phones, just like fingerprint scanners have become.

The smartphone will soon go on sale in August and be available through carriers globally. In New Zealand, the unlocked phone might be priced around $1200.
