Tendulkar stars in Mumbai win over RR

Jaipur: It was yet another brilliant Sachin Tendulkar (89 not out; 59 balls, 10x4, 2x6) all the way as the impressive Mumbai Indians trounced Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs in Match 45 of IPL-2010 at Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Sunday night.
With their eighth win, Mumbai Indians became the first team to storm into the semi-finals with 16 points from 11 matches. Rajasthan Royals lost their sixth match from 12 matches and stay at the fourth position with 12 points. Rajasthan Royals, who were outplayed by Mumbai Indians, made 137/8 in reply to Mumbai Indians’ challenging total of 174/5.
Tendulkar batted brilliantly once again but was lucky at 45 when Aditya Dole dropped him at square leg off Trivedi in the 15th over. It proved costly for Rajasthan Royals. The Mumbai Indian skipper reached his fifth 50 of this year’s tournament off 45 balls.
Pollard, the costliest IPL player, smashed 13-ball 25, including a massive six over mid-wicket off Dole. But the bowler had his revenge by bowling the West Indian. Tendulkar struck two sixes of the last over, bowled by Trivedi, to snatch the Orange Cap from Jacques Kallis (Royal Challengers, Bangalore). Batting as majestic as ever, Tendulkar recorded his highest IPL individual score of 89 not out. He has so far scored 512 runs from 11 matches.
Earlier, Australian pace bowler Shane Watson’s double strike in the second over put Mumbai Indians on the back foot (12/2).
Veteran Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya, who came into the match in place of South African pace man Ryan McLaren, was out to a soft dismissal. The left-hander gave a catch to extra cover. Ambati Rayudu (0) gloved a Watson bouncer to wicketkeeper Naman Ojha.
The umpires had to refer to the third umpire after skipper Sachin Tendulkar had thought that it was the second bouncer of the over. But the third umpire ruled the decision in favour of the bowler.
The aggressive Watson was on fire as he captured his third wicket and this time left-hander Saurabh Tiwary (15) hooked it straight to fine leg fielder. Rajasthan Royals had made a strong start. Tendulkar, who has the maximum number of boundaries in this edition (71), crossed 1,000 runs in IPL in style when he struck three fours of leg spinner Shane Warne.
Left-hander JP Duminy (31 off 32 balls) and Tendulkar took the score from 30/3 to 93.
The ever-improving Siddarth Trivedi broke the partnership by dismissing Duminy, caught at short mid-wicket. Kieron Pollard survived a first-ball run out but Adam Vogues missed the target from close at point.
Playing in his first match, Dhawal Kulkarni got rid of the dangerous Micheal Lumb (8) in the first over by having the left-hander caught smartly by Duminy at point when Rajasthan Royals began the hot chase. It was 9/2 as Zaheer Khan found a thick edge of Naman Ojha’s bat and an agile Tendulkar made no mistake at slip. Wicketkeeper Ambati Rayudu got into the act by running out Shane Watson (1) with a brilliant throw to the non-striker’s end.
Rajasthan Royals could never recover from the disastrous start. The Mumbai Indian bowlers bowled to a plan and they throttled the Rajasthan Royals batsmen. The explosive Yusuf Pathan, who hit a 37-ball century against them in their previous match, could not repeat his Mumbai innings.
He scored 10 before being caught by Harbhajan Singh off Pollard. Rajasthan Royals finally lost a home match and Tendulkar had the last laugh. Zaheer Khan was aggressive and tight (4-0-17-2).
Mumbai Indians made two changes. Jayasuriya, who last week won Parliament seat in Sri Lanka elections, came in place of McLaren while pace bowler Dhawal Kulkarni played his first match replacing Shikhar Dhawan. But there was no change in Rajasthan Royals team.
